SAFETY & PLANNING

Safety is integral to the way I work. Careful planning, good communication and realistic scheduling are fundamental to running a safe and successful set.
 

As a First Assistant Director, I build safety into the planning process as the creative vision develops into a practical shooting plan, working closely with departments, specialist teams and the Film Safety Officer. Whether dealing with vehicular stunts, marine work, SFX and pyrotechnics, or technically demanding sequences, safety considerations are built into the plan from the outset.
 

I take safety briefings seriously, keeping them practical, clear and human. Everyone should understand the work, the risks and how they are managed, and feel comfortable raising questions or concerns.
 

I keep up with safety bulletins, guidance and current best practice, and have often worked in countries where established film safety practices are less developed. In those situations, I help introduce and reinforce clear safety procedures, particularly around studio and location operations, working with local teams and the Film Safety Officer to develop practical protocols suited to the production.
 

For me, safety is always at the forefront of executing a successful shoot. That means looking after the welfare of the cast and crew, anticipating problems before they happen, and making sure agreed procedures and protections are put into practice on set.
 

A safe set is a well-prepared set.
