SAFETY & PLANNING

Safety is part of good filmmaking, not something added on afterwards.

For me, safety is integral to the way I work. I believe good safety starts long before the cameras roll. Clear planning, good communication and realistic scheduling are fundamental to running a safe and successful set.

I take safety briefings seriously, keeping them practical, clear and human. Everyone should understand the work, the risks and how they are managed, and feel comfortable raising questions or concerns. The aim is for everyone to feel informed, prepared and confident to do their job safely.

I keep up with safety bulletins, guidance and current best practice, and have often worked in countries where established film safety practices are less developed. In those situations, I help introduce and reinforce clear safety procedures, particularly around studio and location operations, working closely with local teams and the Film Safety Officer to develop practical protocols suited to the production.

As a First Assistant Director, I build safety into the planning process from the earliest stages of prep, working closely with departments and specialist teams. Whether dealing with vehicular stunts, marine work, SFX and pyrotechnics, or technically demanding sequences, good safety starts with good preparation.

For me, safety is always at the forefront of executing a trouble-free shoot. That means looking after the welfare of the cast and crew, anticipating problems before they happen, and making sure the production has the right procedures and protections in place. A safe set is a well-prepared set.
